Illegal asbestos‑containing uralita dumping investigated in Castro de Rei, Spain
The Guardia Civil opened an investigation after a truck allegedly dumped old uralita plates that contain asbestos onto a municipal plot in the industrial zone of Castro de Ribeiras de Lea, located in the municipality of Castro de Rei, Lugo province, Galicia. Surveillance footage from the town’s 24‑hour cameras identified the vehicle and the three individuals involved, suggesting the material was discharged on up to two occasions.
The illegal waste is classified as hazardous and subject to strict handling rules. Two administrative complaints were filed under Galicia’s waste‑management legislation, which allows penalties of up to €300,000 for unauthorized abandonment or disposal of dangerous residues. The contaminated plates were subsequently removed and taken to an authorized firm for proper treatment.
