Illegal Dump Fire Near Ciudad Juárez Persists as Authorities Weigh Sanctions

A fire that broke out on Wednesday at an illegal waste dump in the Los Kilómetros area north of Ciudad Juárez remains uncontrolled. Firefighters from the Heroic Fire Department are battling the blaze, which is difficult to extinguish because the trash‑laden soil limits water penetration. Heavy machinery and sand trucks are being used to smother the flames, and a third of the site has already been covered with earth.

Municipal civil‑protection director Sergio Rodríguez said the municipal government will visit the site on Monday to consider sanctions against the property owner, who is responsible for monitoring the land even if he did not start the fire. Rodríguez also urged residents to keep the area clean under the "Juárez Amanece Limpio" program and to report illegal dumping to help prevent future incidents.
