Illegal mining near Madidi National Park causes pollution and threats in Bolivia
Residents of the Chushuara Originaria community in the Apolo municipality, La Paz, are reporting intense illegal gold mining activities occurring just 800 meters from the Madidi National Park and Natural Protected Area. Despite a judicial resolution (Acción Popular 05/2023) issued in September 2023 ordering the immediate suspension of unlicensed mining in the Beni River and its tributaries, operations have resumed with increased intensity.
Local inhabitants report that the illegal miners are using heavy machinery, including bulldozers, excavators, approximately 15 dump trucks, and washing ramps, operating 24 hours a day. The activity is reportedly causing significant mercury pollution in the Beni and Quendeque rivers, threatening the unique biodiversity of the Madidi ecosystem and the health of indigenous communities, including the Tsimane and Moseten peoples.
Community members have filed complaints with the Prosecutor's Office and the Administrative Mining Jurisdictional Authority (AJAM), but claim no effective action has been taken. Furthermore, residents have reported facing threats and intimidation from armed groups supporting the mining operations.
