Illegal waste dumping discovered in Otok, Croatia

Authorities in Otok, Croatia, are investigating the illegal dumping of approximately 106 tons of plastic and textile waste. The materials, reportedly originating from Italy, were discovered in large jumbo bags on private property in the Slavonia region.

Investigations by the State Inspectorate revealed that the waste was documented in paperwork as being destined for Bulgaria. However, instead of reaching its intended destination, the material was unloaded in Otok. The operation was allegedly carried out by a Slovenian national who had established a company in Croatia with a minimal capital of 1.33 euros.

Otok Mayor Slavko Grgić reported that he learned of the incident through media reports and has since filed complaints with the police and relevant inspection services. Officials noted that the site contained roughly 100 jumbo bags weighing approximately 500 kilograms each, along with additional material found in a former warehouse. While the waste was found on private land, inspectors are investigating whether the landowner was aware of the illegal activity.
