Illegal waste dumping poses environmental risks in France

Illegal waste dumping, known as ‘wild landfills,’ represents a significant environmental and economic challenge in France. According to ADEME, more than 100,000 sites have been identified across both urban and rural areas, including forests and roadsides. These unregulated sites result in millions of tons of abandoned waste annually, costing local authorities hundreds of millions of euros in management expenses.

The ecological consequences are severe. These sites release methane, a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than CO2, contributing to global warming. Furthermore, the lack of sorting leads to the waste of raw materials and increased energy consumption. Toxic substances such as batteries and solvents can poison soil and groundwater, while plastics and metals disrupt local ecosystems and attract pests like rats and insects. These conditions also pose direct risks to human health.
