Illegal waste dumping sparks resident protests in Vargem Grande and Maringá, Brazil

In Vargem Grande, residents of the Jardim Fortaleza neighborhood reported that a sofa, a toilet and piles of debris were repeatedly dumped on a vacant lot at Rua Jorge A. Costa, number 190. Despite numerous appeals to the municipal government, local officials, and a city councilor, the site remains uncleared. The area is classified as rural, which limits the city’s authority to enforce wall or sidewalk construction, and nearby houses also contribute to the litter problem. Health agents have visited but cannot intervene in the outer spaces, raising concerns about standing water and dengue risk.

In Maringá, inhabitants complained about irregular trash accumulation on a central sidewalk at Avenida Horácio Raccanello Filho and a clogged storm drain in Jardim Aclimação. Although the municipal sanitation department states that regular collection occurs and that illegal dumping is punishable, eleven maintenance requests for the drain have gone unanswered, heightening flood risk during rains. The department urged citizens to report violations via the municipal hotline and active citizenship program.
