IllFonic removes controversial minigame from Halloween: The Game

Developer IllFonic has removed a controversial multiplayer mechanic from the upcoming video game ‘Halloween: The Game’ following backlash during its early access period. The feature, officially called the ‘Two-Person Power-Up,’ allowed two players hiding in a closet to engage in an implied sexual minigame to receive a ‘Stronger Together’ gameplay buff.

The controversy arose when players discovered the mechanic lacked age restrictions, allowing the character Dr. Samuel Loomis—an older man modeled after the late actor Donald Pleasence—to engage in these interactions with teenage survivors, such as Lynda van der Klok. Clips of these pairings went viral on social media, leading to widespread criticism regarding the appropriateness of the interaction.

IllFonic addressed the issue by releasing a hotfix that completely excised the feature rather than implementing age-based restrictions. The studio described the situation as a ‘major oversight’ and a ‘serious blunder’ during the production stage, noting that the system failed to properly account for interactions involving reinforcement characters. While the removal has drawn some criticism from players who wanted a more targeted fix, the studio stated it is currently focusing on immediate game needs and addressing other technical issues.
