Illinois assisted suicide law faces lawsuit from clergy and doctors

A group of Catholic and Lutheran clergy, physicians, and a nursing facility have filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois to challenge the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act. The law, signed by Governor JB Pritzker, is scheduled to take effect on September 12.

The plaintiffs argue that the legislation violates religious liberties and free speech rights. Specifically, the lawsuit contests mandates that require healthcare professionals to inform patients of the potential benefits of assisted suicide and the requirement that doctors who refuse to participate must refer patients to other providers who are willing to assist.

The complaint alleges that these provisions force religious institutions to promote practices that conflict with their faith and the Hippocratic Oath. Furthermore, the plaintiffs express concern over vague wording in the law that could lead to fines, license revocation, or criminal prosecution for those accused of providing misinformation that might obstruct access to assisted suicide.
