Illinois data center growth could create 121,000 jobs
A study by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute and the University of Illinois projects that $57 billion in new data center investments through 2035 could create approximately 121,000 jobs in Illinois. Most of these positions are expected to be temporary construction and skilled trade roles, with only about 2,800 identified as direct, permanent positions.
Beyond employment, the report suggests that data center growth could generate nearly $300 million in additional annual property tax revenue for local municipalities, potentially funding schools, libraries, and emergency services. However, the expansion carries potential drawbacks, including an estimated $12 monthly increase in electric bills for residents due to high energy demands.
In response to public concerns regarding water and energy consumption, the report proposes 10 policy guardrails to ensure responsible development. This comes as Governor JB Pritzker has paused state tax incentives for data center construction and formed an AI cabinet to assess technological risks and grid impacts.
