Illinois defeats UAB 42-23 in college football season opener
The Illinois Fighting Illini opened their season with a 42-23 victory over the UAB Blazers at Gies Memorial Stadium. Transfer quarterback Katin Houser led the Illini in his debut, completing 13 of 17 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding a rushing touchdown.
Collin Dixon contributed two receiving touchdowns on six catches for 70 yards. The momentum shifted significantly at the end of the first half when Houser connected with Ty Robinson on a 54-yard ‘Hail Mary’ pass, marking Illinois’ first successful play of that kind in seven years. Ca’Lil Valentine also scored on a 51-yard run.
Despite the win, Illinois struggled with several missed tackles under new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck’s 3-5-5 scheme. UAB outgained the Illini 413-333 yards, led by quarterback Ryder Burton, who threw for 219 yards and a touchdown.
