Illinois parts ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema announced Sunday that the university is parting ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck. The decision, described as a mutual agreement, comes after only four games in Hauck’s tenure.

Hauck, who joined the program in February following his retirement as Montana’s head coach, requested an early meeting with Bielema to discuss the leadership change. The move follows a 42-19 loss to No. 7 Ohio State, where the Illini defense struggled significantly, allowing 518 total yards and permitting Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith to record 12 receptions for 217 yards and four touchdowns.

Through the first four games, the Illinois defense has struggled nationally, ranking 100th in scoring defense and 111th in total defense. Bielema stated that the change is in the best interest of the staff and student-athletes, noting that the program has a plan to move forward. A successor for the defensive coordinator position has not yet been named.
