Illinois expands film tax credits to attract movie industry
Illinois is implementing enhanced tax incentives to attract film production, positioning the state alongside major hubs like California, New York, and Georgia. New legislation signed by Governor J. B. Pritzker expands base credits on resident labor and vendor spending from 30 to 35 percent, with some production companies potentially receiving 45 percent or more of their expenditures back in income tax credits.
Developer Christopher Breakwell is leveraging these incentives to build ‘Hollywood River,’ a proposed $95 million film studio development in Wood River. The project aims to transform a 105-acre site near the Mississippi River into a production hub featuring sound stages. Breakwell noted that the state’s enhanced tax credit offerings were a primary motivator for his investment in the region.
