Illinois football prepares for season opener against UAB

The Illinois Fighting Illini prepare to open their season against UAB in Champaign, Illinois, facing significant roster changes following a nine-win season. Head coach Bret Bielema is introducing several new players at key positions, most notably at quarterback.

Katin Houser, a transfer from East Carolina, is expected to take over the quarterback role previously held by Luke Altmyer. Houser joins Illinois after a productive two-year stint at East Carolina, where he recorded 37 touchdowns and 5,306 yards, following earlier seasons at Michigan State.

Defensively, the team is implementing a new 3-3-5 alignment. This scheme was installed by newly hired coach Bobby Hauck to leverage the team's deep defensive backfield and compensate for an inexperienced defensive line. Returning defensive starters include safety Matt Bailey, corner Juice Clarke, and corner Tanner Heckel, alongside the return of Xavier Scott from injury.
