Illinois Governor establishes AI Cabinet to assess technology risks

Governor JB Pritzker has signed an executive order establishing an Illinois Artificial Intelligence Cabinet. This new advisory group is tasked with assessing the risks posed by AI and recommending ways to strengthen safety, accountability, and public infrastructure protections within the state.

The unpaid cabinet will consist of experts from academia, law, ethics, and governance, as well as representatives from various state agencies. Through 2027, the group will formulate policy proposals, analyze emerging AI-related incidents, and evaluate the feasibility of new regulations. This may include tying data center incentives or operational approvals to a company’s ability to meet transparency and safety standards.

This move follows the implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, which requires large AI developers in Illinois to disclose safety practices and undergo independent audits. The initiative aims to address AI risks to critical systems such as water, education, and information infrastructure while the federal government maintains a less restrictive approach.
