Illinois Governor issues disaster proclamation for 15 storm-hit counties

Governor J. B. Pritzker has issued a disaster proclamation for 15 Illinois counties following a period of severe storms and a record-breaking tornado season. As of mid-August 2026, the state has recorded over 200 tornadoes, a figure significantly higher than neighboring Indiana.

The proclamation enables small and rural communities to apply for disaster relief funding of up to $250,000 to assist with debris removal and repairs to public infrastructure. This administrative action allows local jurisdictions to bypass standard procurement constraints and lengthy bidding processes to expedite emergency services and site stabilization.

While the state funding is intended for public infrastructure, individuals seeking assistance for private property damage must apply through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The 15 eligible counties include Alexander, Champaign, Cook, DuPage, Ford, Fulton, Kane, Lake, LaSalle, Marshall, McLean, Pulaski, Tazewell, Vermillion, and Will.
