Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signs bills to curb insurance rate hikes

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed two new laws aimed at protecting residents from steep increases in home and auto insurance premiums. The home‑insurance measure requires insurers to give customers at least 60 days’ notice before a renewal that raises the premium by more than 10 percent. The auto‑insurance law, championed by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, grants state regulators authority to review, challenge, and potentially block excessive rate hikes, bans increases over 10 percent without 30‑day notice, and targets out‑of‑state cost‑shifting.

Supporters say the reforms will improve affordability for drivers, especially in Black and Brown communities, and increase transparency. Industry groups warn the added oversight could limit coverage choices and raise overall costs. The legislation takes effect on July 1 2027.
