Illinois Governor Pritzker warns of AI risks and economic shifts
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has outlined two potential trajectories for artificial intelligence, stating it could either extend human life expectancy to 100 years or pose a threat comparable to nuclear weapons.
Pritzker expressed concerns regarding the concentration of power within a few large technology companies and argued that government intervention is necessary to set limits. He also highlighted potential labor market disruptions, suggesting that AI advancements could drive unemployment rates from approximately 4% to a floor of 7% or 10%. He emphasized the need to protect workers who may lose their jobs due to these shifts.
Additionally, the Governor addressed regional competition, noting that Illinois is actively competing with states such as Texas, Florida, South Carolina, and Michigan to attract businesses and jobs through moderate tax incentives and streamlined administrative processes. Regarding sports, Pritzker stated that efforts are underway to keep the Chicago Bears within Illinois, amid discussions with the NFL and the franchise.
