Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch faces leadership challenge from 26 Democrats
Twenty-six members of the Illinois House Democratic caucus have issued a statement calling for new leadership, placing the tenure of Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch in jeopardy. The group, which represents nearly a third of the caucus, stated they have grown increasingly convinced that the House Democratic Caucus needs new leadership and expressed interest in a robust race for a new Speaker of the House.
The movement follows controversy regarding Welch’s handling of sexual harassment allegations against former state Representative Harry Benton. Critics, including Representative Kelly Cassidy, have questioned Welch’s response to the allegations, which surfaced nearly three years before Benton’s resignation.
Signatories of the letter include several prominent figures, such as Lisa Hernandez, chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois, and leadership members Eva-Dina Delgado and Bob Morgan. The dissenting lawmakers have called for a deliberative selection process rather than a rushed appointment. Welch requires 60 votes to maintain his position, and if all 26 signatories vote against him, his ability to retain the speakership would be significantly compromised.
