Illinois House Speaker threatens budget delays over O’Hare Flyer rail project
Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch has indicated he may use his legislative influence to impact the proposed O’Hare Flyer project. During a meeting in River Forest, Welch suggested he could potentially hold up the budgets of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) if the project negatively affects the communities he represents.
The O’Hare Flyer is a proposed express commuter rail service designed to run between Downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport. While the developer, Dave Lundy, describes the battery-electric service as “whisper quiet,” local residents have raised significant concerns regarding noise levels. Critics argue that wheel and track noise, aerodynamic sounds, and legally required train horns will prevent the service from being quiet.
Opponents also highlight the impact of a multi-year construction period required to modify the existing rail system, which would involve installing berms and bridges through residential neighborhoods. While Welch expressed a desire to hear both support and opposition, the project faces scrutiny over its potential environmental and community impact.
