Illinois housing affordability plan may be delayed
Governor J. B. Pritzker indicated that the Building Up Illinois Developments (BUILD) housing plan may be delayed until the 105th General Assembly begins in January. The proposal aims to increase housing supply and affordability by implementing statewide changes to zoning and regulations to reduce overhead and development timelines.
The initiative previously stalled in May due to disagreements between stakeholders. The Illinois Municipal League (IML) has countered the governor's plan with the Reducing Expenses and Advancing Local (REAL) Housing Act. The IML's proposal seeks to maintain local government control over zoning rather than applying statewide mandates. IML CEO Brad Cole stated that municipal officials remain dedicated to improving housing access while preserving local decision-making processes.
