Illinois leaders debate education funding and governance

Illinois political leaders and candidates are presenting diverging strategies for the state’s education system. Governor JB Pritzker has advocated for continued state funding, citing improvements in reading and math scores and a high school graduation rate as evidence of success under his administration. He supports the Evidence-Based Funding model, which was established in 2017 to improve equity across school districts.

In contrast, Republican challenger Darren Bailey has called for reduced government interference, suggesting that local communities and parents should have more control over educational decisions.

State Representative Mike Crawford is also pushing for expanded investment across the entire educational continuum, from Pre-K to doctoral programs. Crawford is advocating for increased K-12 Evidence-Based Funding and is sponsoring the Adequate and Equitable Public University Funding Act. This proposed model aims to provide public universities with more stable state support to reduce student reliance on tuition and fees.
