Illinois pumpkin production increases despite weather challenges

Illinois pumpkin production rose to approximately 533 million pounds last year, an increase from 485 million pounds in 2024. According to the USDA’s Economic Research Service, Illinois remains the leading state in pumpkin acreage, with 14,800 acres—nearly double that of other top-producing states.

While overall production is up, weather conditions have created varied outcomes for local growers. Some farmers, such as those at Dittmar Farms and Orchard, reported that while a late frost damaged apple crops, the pumpkins remained unaffected by heavy rains and tornadoes. Conversely, Southfork Homestead Pumpkin Patch in Edgar County reported low yields after losing several acres to flooding and rain wash.

The state’s industry is supported by major processing facilities, including Nestle Libby in Morton and Seneca Foods in Princeville. Beyond agricultural output, pumpkin farms serve as significant tourist attractions, drawing visitors from surrounding regions like St. Louis, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
