Illinois Rep. Carol Ammons Faces House Probe After Federal Fraud Indictment

State Rep. Carol Ammons, a Democrat from Urbana, was indicted on eight counts of wire fraud, one count of making a false statement to the FBI, and two counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice. Her husband, Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons, was also charged with obstruction offenses. Both pleaded not guilty, with a pre‑trial conference set for August 24 and a jury trial slated for September 22.

A group of 11 Illinois House Republicans filed a petition to create a special investigating committee to examine Ammons’ conduct and determine whether disciplinary action, including possible expulsion, is warranted. The committee, chaired by Rep. Curtis Tarver and including members from both parties, will hold hearings and allow Ammons to testify under oath. Any recommendation for discipline would require a super‑majority vote of the full House.
