Illinois state grant targets educator shortages in Brown County

The Brown County school district in West-Central Illinois is utilizing a state grant to address persistent educator shortages. Superintendent Lan Eberle reported that the district currently lacks a choral music teacher and an elementary school counselor.

The teacher vacancy grant program is designed to reduce staffing shortages through investments in recruitment, retention, and professional learning. Brown County is among 100 high-need districts that qualified for the 2027 grants. The district is currently reviewing an $85,019 grant to determine how best to apply the funds.

Across the state, districts have used these funds for various purposes, including signing bonuses, retention stipends, tuition reimbursement, mentorship programs, and classroom technology. During the program’s first two years, nearly 16,000 educators received support through these initiatives.
