Alexandros Paporakis arrested in Illinois Hindu temple shooting plot

Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old from Palatine, Illinois, has been arrested following an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora. Authorities believe the suspect, who identified himself as a white supremacist, intended to attack the religious site during Navaratri celebrations.

The incident was thwarted when Paporakis's rifle reportedly jammed during the attempted attack. Following the malfunction, he returned home, where he allegedly searched for instructions on how to clear the jammed firearm. A coworker at a local Taco Bell, after receiving concerning electronic messages and a video of the malfunctioning rifle, alerted authorities.

During a search of Paporakis's residence, police recovered an AR-style rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, tactical gear, and body armor featuring white supremacist imagery. Investigators also discovered an eight-page manifesto titled ‘Why I Fought: A. K. A. : (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)’, which contained extremist ideologies and expressed hatred toward individuals of South Asian and Indian descent.

Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern regarding the racist nature of the plot, while US officials and advocacy groups have called for investigations into the incident as a federal hate crime.
