Illinois to close eight state-run visitor information centers
Illinois will close its eight state-run visitor information centers located within interstate rest areas by the end of the month. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity stated that the role of these centers has evolved as travelers increasingly use digital tools to plan trips, reducing the need for services like manual hotel bookings.
The closures are not due to financial pressures, though the centers cost the state approximately $1.6 million annually to operate. While the information centers are shutting down, the rest areas themselves will remain open and all other services will continue uninterrupted. The decision does not affect independently operated visitor centers managed by local governments or tourism organizations.
The 20 staff members at these locations were employed through third parties rather than directly by the state. Former employees have expressed concern that the move may alienate older travelers who rely on in-person advice and physical brochures rather than online resources.
