Illinois veterinarian kills family members before committing suicide

A veterinarian identified as Brian Schmidt killed four family members before taking his own life in Mendota, Illinois. The victims include his parents, 77-year-old Rebecca Schmidt and 80-year-old James Schmidt, his 22-year-old son, McLain Schmidt, and his 37-year-old partner, Nicole Heizer.

Authorities discovered the five bodies at a residence co-owned by Brian Schmidt and his parents. Police reported finding multiple suicide notes within the home and in Schmidt's vehicle. The motive for the mass shooting remains under investigation.

The tragedy was discovered after the suspect's 44-year-old sister, Kimberly Schmidt, contacted authorities to perform a welfare check on her parents after being unable to reach them. Local residents reported hearing gunshots on Sunday morning, though some initially mistook the sounds for firecrackers related to a Chicago Bears game.
