Illinois women's basketball defeats Detroit Mercy in season opener

No. 23 Illinois secured an 84-50 victory over Detroit Mercy in their season opener at the State Farm Center. The win was driven by strong second-half performances, with Illinois outscoring the Titans 48-18 in the final 20 minutes.

Cearah Parchment and Berry Wallace both recorded double-doubles to lead the Illini. Parchment scored between 20 and 22 points while collecting 11 rebounds, while Wallace added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Gretchen Dolan also contributed 10 points to the win.

Despite a competitive first half that saw Detroit Mercy close the gap to 36-32 by halftime, Illinois pulled away in the third quarter with a 19-2 run. The victory improves Illinois to a 1-0 record for the season.
