Trapani opens first southern Illumina sports hub

On 4 August 2026 the city of Trapani inaugurated Illumina, the first "Sport Illumina" playground in southern Italy. The project, devised by the non‑profit Sport e Salute and funded by the Italian Minister for Sport and Youth, transformed a former drug‑dealing square near Via del Cipresso into a multi‑sport area for basketball, freestyle and calisthenics.

The opening ceremony was led by former world karate champion Stefano Maniscalco, who highlighted sport as a message of brotherhood. Officials present included Diego Nepi Molineris, CEO of Sport e Salute, and Andrea Genco, Trapani’s sports assessor. The initiative is part of a national plan to create 85 playgrounds across Italy, with €31.8 million allocated nationwide and €3.9 million earmarked for Sicily.

Illumina aims to provide free, safe sport facilities for children and families, fostering community cohesion and offering an alternative to social deprivation in the neighbourhood.
