Illustrator Pedro Oyarbide discusses career growth through book cover design

Madrid-based illustrator Pedro Oyarbide has developed a distinct visual style characterized by ornamentation, symbolic depth, and intricate detail, intentionally moving away from modern minimalism.

A major turning point in his career was his work on the Blackwater saga, which became an editorial phenomenon in Europe with over 2.5 million copies sold. This success has led to prestigious commissions, including special illustrated editions of 'The Little Prince', Miguel Hernández’s 'El rayo que no cesa', and a 25th-anniversary edition of Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s 'The Shadow of the Wind'.

Oyarbide, who studied in Madrid and completed a design master's in Germany, has worked as a freelance illustrator since 2013. He notes that his current creative period is marked by an abundance of new projects following the viral success of his previous cover designs.
