ILO adopts first global convention on platform work

The International Labour Organization’s 114th conference in Geneva voted overwhelmingly (406 in favour, 8 against, 36 abstentions) to adopt a new binding convention that sets minimum standards for decent work in the digital platform economy. The agreement, the first of its kind, was the result of two years of negotiations among governments, employers and trade unions and aims to guarantee fair wages, social protection, data‑privacy safeguards, algorithmic transparency and the right to unionise for millions of platform‑based workers worldwide.

Moroccan union leaders highlighted the vote as a “historic joy”, noting Morocco’s strong backing of the text. The convention now moves to the ratification stage, requiring at least two member‑state approvals to become effective twelve months after the necessary deposits are made. Once ratified, it will shape national legislation and corporate practices across the rapidly expanding platforms sector.
