Ilocos Norte promotes climate-resilient food gardens

Ilocos Norte is promoting the establishment of climate-resilient food gardens to strengthen household and community food security against the effects of climate change. Funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) under its Galing PCAARRD Kontra Krisis program, the initiative encourages families, schools, and community groups to grow nutritious crops using sustainable practices.

The program is being implemented in partnership with Mariano Marcos State University through its Natural Resources Conservation and Management Center. Key initiatives include the distribution of quality root-crop planting materials, agri-based livelihood assistance, and the adoption of science-based methods such as vermicomposting, natural pest management, and efficient water-use technologies. Beneficiaries include barangays, schools, senior citizens, and participants in social welfare programs like 4Ps and TUPAD.
