Equestrian Ilona Berbekar has been selected to represent Canada at the World Association for Working Equitation (WAVE) World Championships. Competing alongside her horse, Juncal da Caniceira, Berbekar will join a field of 74 participants from 22 nations.

The championships are scheduled to take place in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, from September 8 to 13. Berbekar's selection follows a period of intensive training and international qualification. In late 2025, she successfully achieved the necessary scores to qualify during an international event in Jerez, where she was the sole North American entrant among 25 riders from nine countries.

Berbekar, who previously operated a horse farm in Enderby, moved to Calgary in 2024 to focus on the sport. She has also made history as the first Canadian to compete in working equitation in Portugal.
