Ilovica copper mine project promises economic growth and jobs

Supporters of the proposed copper mine in Ilovica, North Macedonia, argue that the investment could drive significant economic development across the southeastern region. Local residents, including Nikola Stamenov of the 'I zdravje i rabota' initiative, suggest the project could create well-paid jobs for young people, potentially reducing emigration from the area.

Stamenov emphasized that economic benefits must be paired with environmental responsibility. He stated that by adhering to modern European and global ecological standards, the project can ensure the protection of air, soil, and groundwater. To ensure compliance, he has called on authorities to establish an independent monitoring body to oversee mining operations and verify that they meet required standards.

Proponents believe the mine will contribute to the national gross domestic product, improve local infrastructure, and provide financial benefits to both municipalities and the state.
