Ilperveld nature excursion highlights autumn wildlife in the Netherlands
Nature enthusiasts in the Netherlands can participate in a guided excursion through the Ilperveld peatlands on September 27. Organized by Landschap Noord-Holland, the tour departs from the Ilperveld Visitor Center in Landsmeer. The excursion aims to observe autumn transitions, including various mushrooms, fungi, and insects such as the tiger spider. The route includes walking across quaking peat and through the Berkenbos and Zuiderschorren areas, which serve as habitats for ring snakes.
In broader regional nature news, the seasonal transition is also marked by the migration of nightjars toward the Sahel. While populations of these birds have seen improvements due to better heathland management, their breeding season has concluded. Additionally, the autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) is noted for its rare presence in the Netherlands, with wild specimens primarily found in South Limburg and southeastern Brabant.
