Ilumán, Ecuador celebrates Virgin of Carmen with pilgrimages and festivities

From July 17 to 19, the town of Ilumán in Imbabura Province hosted the concluding celebrations of the annual patron saint festival for the Virgen del Carmen. Pilgrims from nearby Otavalo, Ibarra, Cotacachi, Araque and other communities walked together from their parish churches to Ilumán, where they were welcomed with a ceremonial "Abrazo de la Confraternidad" that highlighted unity and gratitude.

The three‑day program featured a religious procession, a solemn mass organized by the local Drivers Association, and a series of cultural events including dances, floats, and a night of music and fireworks. Local authorities noted that the festivities also helped stimulate the town’s economy by attracting visitors and supporting local entrepreneurs.

The celebration concluded with a traditional burning of castles, a "multicolour and sounds" night, and a final procession of the Virgin’s image through Ilumán’s main streets.
