Šilutė experiences catastrophic extreme rainfall

A catastrophic meteorological phenomenon involving extreme rainfall has been recorded in Šilutė, Lithuania, where 82.5 mm of rain fell in less than 12 hours, representing 93 percent of the typical August monthly norm.

Heavy rainfall was also documented across Western Lithuania, including Mažeikiai, Šiauliai, Kretinga, Skuodas, Rietavas, Klaipėda, Laukuva, Vėžaičiai, and Plungė. In some areas, nearly an entire month's worth of precipitation fell within half a day.

This intense precipitation has caused water levels in various bodies of water to rise rapidly. Significant increases in water levels were observed in western Lithuania, specifically in the Minija, Bartuva, Venta, and Šešupė rivers. Continued rainy weather and potential thunderstorms are forecasted for the coming days.
