Ilva Myriam Hoyos appointed Colombia's new Education Minister

Viviane Morales has resigned as Colombia’s Minister of Education, marking the first cabinet change in President Abelardo De La Espriella’s administration. Morales, who assumed the role on August 7, 2026, cited an unexpected family situation that requires her immediate and full attention as the reason for her departure.

President De La Espriella accepted the resignation and appointed Ilva Myriam Hoyos as the new Minister of Education. Hoyos is a lawyer and academic with a doctorate in Law from the University of Navarra. Her professional background includes serving as a delegate prosecutor for the defense of children and family rights, as well as holding leadership roles at the Universidad de La Sabana.

Morales’s brief tenure included efforts to address educational policies and provide financial relief to Icetex beneficiaries following recent earthquakes. Her departure comes less than a month after the start of the current government.
