Ilya Espino de Marotta becomes first woman to lead Panama Canal

Ilya Espino de Marotta has officially assumed the role of Administrator of the Panama Canal, becoming the first woman to lead the interoceanic waterway in its 112-year history. Her term, which began in September 2026, is scheduled to run until 2033, succeeding Ricaurte Vásquez Morales.

Espino de Marotta brings over 40 years of experience to the position. Having joined the institution in 1985 as a marine engineer, she has held various technical and executive roles, including leadership in the Panama Canal Expansion Program and serving as Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer.

Her administration faces significant challenges regarding water security due to climate anomalies affecting vessel transit. To address this, she will oversee a strategic vision and an $8.5 billion investment portfolio. Key infrastructure priorities include the construction of the Río Indio reservoir to secure freshwater supplies, the development of new port terminals on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and the implementation of specialized energy and logistics corridors.
