Ilya Espino de Marotta becomes first female Panama Canal Administrator

Engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta has officially assumed her role as the Administrator of the Panama Canal for the 2026–2033 term, making history as the first woman to lead the vital interoceanic waterway.

With a career at the Canal spanning over 40 years, Espino de Marotta previously held several key positions, including Deputy Administrator and Sustainability Officer. She played a significant role in the Canal Expansion Program that added a third set of locks to the waterway.

Her administration faces immediate challenges regarding water security, exacerbated by climate fluctuations and the El Niño phenomenon. A primary priority is the development of a reservoir on the Río Indio to ensure reliable freshwater supplies for both the Canal's operations and the local population. Additionally, her term will oversee the execution of the 2025–2035 Strategic Vision, which includes expanding logistics infrastructure, energy corridors, and new container terminals on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
