Ilya Khrzhanovsky defends ‘DAU’ film at Venice Film Festival

At the Venice Film Festival, Russian filmmaker Ilya Khrzhanovsky addressed controversies surrounding his film ‘DAU’. The project, which depicts the life of Soviet physicist Lev Landau, faced criticism from the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding its financial backing.

Khrzhanovsky clarified that the film received initial funding from Russian oligarch Sergei Adoniev between 2008 and 2019. He noted that the project’s financing has since evolved and is an international co-production.

Addressing the geopolitical context, Khrzhanovsky stated that his position on the Russia-Ukraine war has been clear since before the 2022 full-scale invasion. He expressed support for the Ukrainian government and its efforts to win the war.
