İlyas Akman’s Breast Cancer Journey Highlights Male Awareness in Turkey

İlyas Akman, a 54‑year‑old resident of Tekirdağ, Turkey, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 after feeling a lump while bathing. Early imaging confirmed the tumor, and he underwent a successful surgery followed by four months of chemotherapy.

Following treatment, Akman and his family pursued genetic testing, which revealed a hereditary predisposition. To prevent recurrence, he had his remaining breast removed a year later, despite the absence of disease at that site. His sister later received the same diagnosis and is now undergoing treatment.

Akman’s story underscores that, while rare, breast cancer can affect men and that early detection, prompt medical care, and genetic screening are crucial for improved outcomes.
