Imagination Library faces funding cuts in Indiana and Missouri

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a nonprofit program that provides free books to children from birth to age five, is facing significant funding reductions in Indiana and Missouri.

In Indiana, Republican lawmakers removed state funding for the program from the budget. Governor Mike Braun stated the state would rely on private donors instead, despite previous state contributions that supported over 125,000 children. In Missouri, funding for the upcoming fiscal year was reduced from approximately $6 million to $2 million, resulting in a freeze on new enrollments effective July 1. While existing participants may continue to receive books until supplies run out, the reduction marks a sharp decline from the previous year.

The Imagination Library, established in 1995 through the Dollywood Foundation, has distributed more than 300 million books globally and currently serves over 3 million children. The funding cuts have drawn criticism from residents and former foundation executives, who argue that the state support is a vital investment in early childhood literacy.
