IMEC to build first non-Belgian semiconductor lab in Málaga

Spain will begin construction of the IMEC center in Málaga during the first quarter of 2027. This facility marks the first time the Belgian Interuniversity Microelectronic Centre will establish a laboratory outside of Belgium.

The project represents an investment exceeding 600 million euros, funded jointly by the Spanish Government through the PERTE Chip program (500 million euros) and the Junta de Andalucía. The facility, located at the Málaga TechPark, will feature a 2,000-square-meter cleanroom and 60 machines capable of handling 300mm wafers.

Unlike mass-production foundries, the Málaga center will focus on prototyping, validating designs, and testing processes before industrial production. The project is expected to create 200 direct jobs, 500 indirect jobs in the city, and an additional 1,000 positions within the territory.
