IMF and investors warn of rising global debt and fiscal imbalances
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and prominent investors are raising alarms regarding rising global debt and fiscal imbalances. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva urged major economies to adjust their policies, stating that the United States cannot rely solely on economic growth to manage its debt and must implement taxation or spending measures. She suggested that China should shift its focus from exports to domestic consumption, while Europe needs to increase investment to bolster competitiveness.
Georgieva noted that high bond yields in advanced economies are placing significant pressure on low-income nations, where debt servicing costs as a percentage of revenue have risen from 6% a decade ago to 14%.
Adding to these concerns, Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio warned that the U.S. bond bear market may have a long way to go. Dalio described a potential vicious cycle where rising interest rates increase borrowing costs, which in turn drives up total debt levels. He noted that U.S. debt burdens, measured by total borrowing and repayment costs relative to revenue, have reached their highest levels since World War II. Dalio also highlighted that traditional buyers, such as Japan, may decrease their demand for U.S. Treasuries to support their own domestic markets.
