IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings begin in Bangkok

The 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings have commenced in Bangkok, Thailand, drawing approximately 18,000 participants from around the world. The summit takes place against a backdrop of significant global economic instability, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, energy supply shocks, and rising interest rates.

World Bank President Ajay Banga noted that the institution is in discussions with 30 to 40 countries regarding potential emergency assistance to manage energy crises and price volatility. He highlighted that while the global economy has shown resilience due to AI investments, developing nations face mounting pressures from high diesel and fertilizer costs, as well as climate risks like the El Niño phenomenon. Estimates suggest developing nations will owe approximately $400 billion to external creditors by 2026.

To mitigate energy market volatility, G7 nations have agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from emergency reserves. In Bangkok, the Thai government is utilizing the forum to promote investment in future-facing industries, specifically artificial intelligence and electric vehicles. Notably, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is not attending the meetings, sending two senior officials in his place.
