IMF and World Bank expand credit to Trump-aligned Latin American nations
Latin American governments aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump are increasing their access to funding and support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. This trend toward market-oriented and fiscally responsible policies was highlighted during the institutions' annual meetings in Bangkok.
Nigel Chalk, Director of the IMF's Western Hemisphere Department, noted a shift in regional policy direction, stating the IMF aims to support a transition toward policies that are “more socially conscious, more fiscally responsible, and more market-oriented.”
The IMF currently manages ten active programs in the Americas. Key developments include a preventive credit line for Chile, new financing for Bolivia to address its economic crisis, and ongoing negotiations with Colombia for a new program. The IMF also maintains operations in El Salvador and Argentina, and is resuming relations with Venezuela under Washington's influence.
