IMF pledges firm support for Iraq and reports progress on Lebanon loan
During the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced the Fund’s intention to provide “very firm” support to Iraq, encompassing both financial and policy assistance. This comes as Iraq seeks to implement its Vision 2050 to reduce its heavy dependence on oil, which currently accounts for approximately 85% of government revenue.
Regarding Lebanon, Georgieva noted that intensive discussions are ongoing with Lebanese authorities. She reported significant progress toward establishing a loan program but emphasized that further work is required to finalize the agreement. The IMF has projected a sharp economic contraction for Lebanon in 2026 due to regional security tensions and infrastructure damage.
In Iraq, economic challenges persist, including a projected 16% contraction in 2026 followed by a 19% growth in 2027. The country has also faced significant revenue losses attributed to regional conflicts affecting oil exports and maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
