IMF: Asia-Pacific to lead global growth despite energy and geopolitical risks
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reports that the Asia-Pacific region is poised to lead global economic growth despite vulnerabilities to geopolitical tensions and energy shocks. Krishna Srinivasan, IMF Director for the Asia-Pacific, noted that the region's energy intensity is approximately 4% of its GDP, which is nearly double the rate seen in the European Union.
In Timor-Leste, the IMF is providing capacity development support to modernize monetary, financial, and fiscal frameworks. Following its official accession as the 11th member of ASEAN in October 2025, the IMF views the move as a significant opportunity for the country to deepen economic reforms.
Economic projections for Timor-Leste suggest a GDP growth of 4.5% in 2025, followed by 4% in 2026 and 3.7% in 2027. While inflation is expected to remain low, the country faces challenges regarding fiscal sustainability and a high current account deficit.
