IMF chief Georgieva warns of looming global economic shock

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said the world is still unprepared for an accumulation of economic shocks that are becoming more frequent. She cited recent crises—including the COVID‑19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, tariff turbulence and the conflict in the Middle East—as evidence that leaders must build more resilient foundations. Georgieva also warned that artificial‑intelligence adoption could repeat past mistakes if not properly regulated, noting that the United States, the European Union and China are each drafting AI regulatory models.

The IMF plans to update its global outlook in July and will resume its Article IV review of Russia’s economy for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine, a move that has drawn criticism from some EU members who fear it could undermine sanctions. The fund continues to support Ukraine with financing tied to reforms, while urging a collective approach to future shocks.
